    Integrated surveying for the archaeological documentation of a neolithic site

    It has been tested the applicability of integrated surveys (remote sensing, digital photogrammetry and terrestrial laser scanning (TLS)) in order to verify, through gradual and successive steps, how geomatic techniques can get 3D results with metric value combined with a quality content for an archaeological site. In particular, the data have been collected during the excavation campaign of Neolithic archaeological site in Taranto. The possibilities to scan articulated forms, in the presence of curve, concavity and convexity, and jutting parts rotate, characterized by alterations, through the acquisition of a dense points cloud makes the technique TLS needed in archaeology. Through the photogrammetric technique the laser data has been integrated concerning some details found on the site for which it has been required a higher degree of detail. The photogrammetric data has been acquired with the calibrated camera. The processing of the acquired data and their integration has been made possible to study an important archeological site, in its totality, from small scale (general site framework) to large scale (3D model with a high degree of detail) and to structure a multi-temporal database for simplified data management

    The historical building heritage, present in the most of Italian cities centres, is, as part of the construction sector, a working potential, but unfortunately it requires planning of more complex and problematic interventions. However, policies to support on the existing interventions, together with a growing sensitivity for the recovery of assets, determine the need to implement specific studies and to analyse the specific problems of each site. The purpose of this paper is to illustrate the methodology and the results obtained from integrated laser scanning activity in order to have precious architectural information useful not only from the cultural heritage point of view but also to construct more operative and powerful tools, such as BIM (Building Information Modelling) aimed to the management of this cultural heritage. The Papal Basilica and the Sacred Convent of Saint Francis in Assisi in Italy are, in fact, characterized by unique and complex peculiarities, which require a detailed knowledge of the sites themselves to ensure visitor’s security and safety. For such a project, we have to take in account all the people and personnel normally present in the site, visitors with disabilities and finally the needs for cultural heritage preservation and protection. This aim can be reached using integrated systems and new technologies, such as Internet of Everything (IoE), capable of connecting people, things (smart sensors, devices and actuators; mobile terminals; wearable devices; etc.), data/information/knowledge and processes to reach the desired goals.     Development, microstructural and mechanical characterization of innovative magnesium alloys

    Le attività di ricerca svolte nel corso del dottorato di ricerca, sono state focalizzate principalmente sullo studio dell’evoluzione microstrutturale, delle proprietà meccaniche e tribologiche di una particolare lega da fonderia, EV31A, con alte percentuali di terre rare (Nd e Gd > 4% in peso). Le analisi microstrutturali sono state eseguite tramite microscopia ottica (OM), elettronica in scansione (SEM) ed elettronica in trasmissione (TEM), mentre le proprietà meccaniche sono state determinate attraverso prove di trazione e prove di fatica a flessione rotante. Al fine di incrementare le proprietà tribologiche delle leghe di magnesio è stata valutata l’efficacia del trattamento PEO sia sulla lega EV31A, sia sulle più comuni leghe AZ80 e AZ91D, effettuando test tribologici in modalità pattino su cilindro (Block on Ring). Infine è stato condotto uno studio sull’efficacia del trattamento di fusione superficiale laser (LSM), analizzandone gli effetti sia sull’evoluzione microstrutturale, sia sulle proprietà meccaniche e sulla resistenza a corrosione. Le attività svolte nel corso del dottorato di ricerca sono state svolte presso il Dipartimento di Ingegneria Industriale DIN della Scuola di Ingegneria e Architettura dell’Università di Bologna sotto la supervisione della Prof. ssa Lorella Ceschini.The research activities carried out during the PhD course have been focused mainly on the study of microstrucural evolution, mechanical and tribological properties of EV31A Mg casting alloy, characterized by a high content of rare earth elements (Nd and Gd > wt.4%). Microstructural analyses have been carried out by optical microscopy (OM), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and electron transmission microscopy (TEM); mechanical properties have been evaluated by tensile and rotating bending fatigue tests. Aiming to increase tribological properties of magnesium alloys the effectiveness of PEO treatment on EV31A alloy, as well as on AZ80 e AZ91D, has been studied by means of block on ring tribological tests. Moreover, the effectiveness of laser surface melting treatment has been evaluated, by studying its effects on microstructure, mechanical properties and corrosion resistance of Elektron 21 alloy.     A Grid platform for the European Civil Protection e-Infrastructure: the Forest Fires use scenario

    During the full cycle of the emergency management, Civil Protection operative procedures involve many actors belonging to several institutions playing different roles. In this context the sharing of information is a vital requirement to make correct and effective decisions. Therefore a European-wide technological infrastructure providing a distributed and coordinated access to different kinds of resources (data, information, services, expertise, etc.) could enhance existing Civil Protection applications and even enable new ones. In the recent years Grid technologies have reached a mature state providing a platform for secure and coordinated resource sharing between the participants in the so-called Virtual Organizations. Moreover the Earth and Space Sciences Informatics provide the conceptual tools for modelling the geospatial information shared in Civil Protection applications during its entire life cycle. Therefore a European Civil Protection e-infrastructure could be based on a Grid platform enhanced with Earth Sciences specific services. However Civil Protection applications stress the requirements of Earth Sciences research applications, for example in terms of real-time support. Therefore a set of high-level services specifically tailored for such applications must be built on top of the Grid platform. As a result of a requirement analysis, the FP6 project CYCLOPS has proposed an architectural framework for the future European Civil Protection e-Infrastructure. In this architecture a layer of high-level services tailored to Civil Protection applications is built on top of the EGEE Grid middleware. This architectural approach has been tested implementing a prototype of a grid-enabled RISICO, the application for wild fire risk assessment used by the Italian Civil Protection

    Tevere Cavo è una proposta progettuale per le sponde del Tevere e le aree limitrofe nel settore nord di Roma, che vede nel ume una importante infrastruttura per il rilancio della città. Si tratta di un progetto urbano che ha visto coinvolti circa trecento tra giovani architetti, dottorandi, laureandi e studenti, appartenenti al Laboratorio di progettazione architettonica IV e al corso Progettazione Architettonica Assistita al Computer e che trova nella catalogazione delle aree abbandonate e sottoutilizzate, nei programmi ideati, nei metodi e negli strumenti utilizzati le maggiori componenti di interesse.Tevere Cavo is a design proposal for the rims of the Tiber and its surrounding areas in the northern sector of Rome. The project looks at the river as an important infrastructure for the revitalization of the city. Tevere cavo has involved about three hundred young architects, PhD, undergraduates, Design studio and Information Technology students. Most relevant area of interest include: the cataloging of abandoned and underutilized areas, the innovative project briefs, the design methods and the IT tools used in the developing and communication of the project and its potential impact in the city

    Prevalence of anatomical variants and coronary anomalies in 543 consecutive patients studied with 64-slice CT coronary angiography

    The aim of our study was to assess the prevalence of variants and anomalies of the coronary artery tree in patients who underwent 64-slice computed tomography coronary angiography (CT-CA) for suspected or known coronary artery disease. A total of 543 patients (389 male, mean age 60.5 ± 10.9) were reviewed for coronary artery variants and anomalies including post-processing tools. The majority of segments were identified according to the American Heart Association scheme. The coronary dominance pattern results were: right, 86.6%; left, 9.2%; balanced, 4.2%. The left main coronary artery had a mean length of 112 ± 55 mm. The intermediate branch was present in the 21.9%. A variable number of diagonals (one, 25%; two, 49.7%; more than two, 24%; none, 1.3%) and marginals (one, 35.2%; two, 46.2%; more than two, 18%; none, 0.6%) was visualized. Furthermore, CT-CA may visualize smaller branches such as the conus branch artery (98%), the sinus node artery (91.6%), and the septal branches (93%). Single or associated coronary anomalies occurred in 18.4% of the patients, with the following distribution: 43 anomalies of origin and course, 68 intrinsic anomalies (59 myocardial bridging, nine aneurisms), three fistulas. In conclusion, 64-slice CT-CA provides optimal visualization of the variable and complex anatomy of coronary arteries because of the improved isotropic spatial resolution and flexible post-processing tool

    Impairment of circulating endothelial progenitors in Down syndrome

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Pathological angiogenesis represents a critical issue in the progression of many diseases. Down syndrome is postulated to be a systemic anti-angiogenesis disease model, possibly due to increased expression of anti-angiogenic regulators on chromosome 21. The aim of our study was to elucidate some features of circulating endothelial progenitor cells in the context of this syndrome.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>Circulating endothelial progenitors of Down syndrome affected individuals were isolated, <it>in vitro </it>cultured and analyzed by confocal and transmission electron microscopy. ELISA was performed to measure SDF-1Îą plasma levels in Down syndrome and euploid individuals. Moreover, qRT-PCR was used to quantify expression levels of <it>CXCL12 </it>gene and of its receptor in progenitor cells. The functional impairment of Down progenitors was evaluated through their susceptibility to hydroperoxide-induced oxidative stress with BODIPY assay and the major vulnerability to the infection with human pathogens. The differential expression of crucial genes in Down progenitor cells was evaluated by microarray analysis.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>We detected a marked decrease of progenitors' number in young Down individuals compared to euploid, cell size increase and some major detrimental morphological changes. Moreover, Down syndrome patients also exhibited decreased SDF-1Îą plasma levels and their progenitors had a reduced expression of SDF-1Îą encoding gene and of its membrane receptor. We further demonstrated that their progenitor cells are more susceptible to hydroperoxide-induced oxidative stress and infection with Bartonella henselae. Further, we observed that most of the differentially expressed genes belong to angiogenesis, immune response and inflammation pathways, and that infected progenitors with trisomy 21 have a more pronounced perturbation of immune response genes than infected euploid cells.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>Our data provide evidences for a reduced number and altered morphology of endothelial progenitor cells in Down syndrome, also showing the higher susceptibility to oxidative stress and to pathogen infection compared to euploid cells, thereby confirming the angiogenesis and immune response deficit observed in Down syndrome individuals.</p

    Massive-Scale RNA-Seq Analysis of Non Ribosomal Transcriptome in Human Trisomy 21

    Hybridization- and tag-based technologies have been successfully used in Down syndrome to identify genes involved in various aspects of the pathogenesis. However, these technologies suffer from several limits and drawbacks and, to date, information about rare, even though relevant, RNA species such as long and small non-coding RNAs, is completely missing. Indeed, none of published works has still described the whole transcriptional landscape of Down syndrome. Although the recent advances in high-throughput RNA sequencing have revealed the complexity of transcriptomes, most of them rely on polyA enrichment protocols, able to detect only a small fraction of total RNA content. On the opposite end, massive-scale RNA sequencing on rRNA-depleted samples allows the survey of the complete set of coding and non-coding RNA species, now emerging as novel contributors to pathogenic mechanisms. Hence, in this work we analysed for the first time the complete transcriptome of human trisomic endothelial progenitor cells to an unprecedented level of resolution and sensitivity by RNA-sequencing. Our analysis allowed us to detect differential expression of even low expressed genes crucial for the pathogenesis, to disclose novel regions of active transcription outside yet annotated loci, and to investigate a plethora of non-polyadenilated long as well as short non coding RNAs. Novel splice isoforms for a large subset of crucial genes, and novel extended untranslated regions for known genes—possibly novel miRNA targets or regulatory sites for gene transcription—were also identified in this study. Coupling the rRNA depletion of samples, followed by high-throughput RNA-sequencing, to the easy availability of these cells renders this approach very feasible for transcriptome studies, offering the possibility of investigating in-depth blood-related pathological features of Down syndrome, as well as other genetic disorders
